10 ways to avoid failure breaking an addiction

1.) Don’t try to ween off your drug of choice, it doesn’t work. Quit cold turkey, but make sure to detox in a medical facility FIRST. Remember some drugs can be dangerous to quit abrubtly, especially long term alcohol use.

2.) It is a bad idea to trade a vice for a vice, if you are a user of a narcotic then it is not wise to use methadone to fix the problem. You will just end up addicted to methadone. When you detox, be sure it is not in a methadone clinic.

3.) Don’t rely on a one week detox as your method of rehabilitation. Sure, your body might no longer crave it but as we mention many times on our site, the trick is to get the mind to no longer crave a vice. Find friends or family that can help you get a 30-90 day rehabilitation at a nice facility. Some places are actually like taking a vacation at a resort and can really help your mental state.

4.) Don’t think you can just quit tomorrow, it won’t work that way. You have to quit today!

5.) If you don’t believe you have a problem, quitting probably won’t work. You need to acknowledge it, because even though other people will try, only you can do that.

6.) Don’t try to be an island unto yourself. Humanity is a race of social people and you need someone to hold you accountable. This is one of the reasons groups such as narcotics anonymous, alcoholics anonymous, and counselling programs are so successful.

7.) On the flip side, stay away from people who put you in the position to regress to your addicted state. Drug addicts usually love company, and chances are your friends from the lifestyle will want you to get high with them again. We suggest finding them help and if they refuse, find better friends. True friends wouldn’t want to see you and those you love suffer from your addiction.

8.) Consider moving out of your area for good. If you can avoid the atmosphere that made you feel you needed a vice in the first place, then it is quite possible you won’t fall back into one.

9.) Write a journal and use it to remind yourself, and if you are open about your addiction you might consider blogging about it online.

10.) Believe in yourself, you are a better person than you likely give yourself credit for. It doesn’t matter what your past is like, there is only now and the future to look forward to. Self confidence and self forgiveness are keys to success in fighting an addiction.
